The 2024 NFL regular season is almost in the books, and soon all eyes will be on the 14 teams headed to the playoffs, starting with this upcoming weekend’s wild-card round. Before then, teams watching from the outside would probably be making headlines.
Last season, nearly a quarter of NFL franchises had head coaching turnover. What does 2025 hold for teams looking for a fresh start in addition to their favorable draft position? Take a quick look at the current vacancies here:
new England Patriots: The Patriots now need a new head coach after firing Jerrod Mayo shortly after the Week 18 win over the Bills, meaning they missed out on the No. 1 overall pick. With Drake Mays out, this is an intriguing start, as the rest of the roster needs work as well. Team owner Robert Kraft will likely have more patience for the next hire than Mayo, a former Patriots player who lasted just one season when he replaced Bill Belichick.
New Orleans Saints: Dennis Allen was fired on November 4 after a seventh consecutive defeat, ending a strong 2–0 start. Allen went 18–25 in three seasons in New Orleans and failed to make the postseason. Darren Rizzi finished the 2024 campaign 5–12. Whoever takes the reins faces a rebuild amid the Saints’ usual salary-cap headaches and uncertainty at the QB position.
New York Jets: This is one of the worst positions in the league as the franchise is also looking for a general manager. The club fired head coach Robert Saleh on October 8 after a 2–3 start, and GM Joe Douglas was dismissed six weeks later. Although the team has begun interviews, it is unclear whether QB Aaron Rodgers will be part of the new arrangement. Mike Vrabel reportedly interviewed for the job last week with Ron Rivera. ESPN analyst Lewis Riddick interviewed for the GM position.
Chicago Bears: The Bears made history by firing their head coach for the first time in the season, with Thomas Brown taking over as the team was in the midst of a 10-game losing streak that ended with a win over the Packers in the season finale. Whoever replaces Matt Eberflus will primarily be charged with getting No. 1 pick Caleb Williams back on track after a difficult rookie season.
The list of Head Coach vacancies will definitely increase in the coming hours jacksonville jaguars (Doug Pederson), las vegas raiders (Antonio Pierce), dallas cowboys (Mike McCarthy), indianapolis colts (Shane Steichen), and New York Giants (Brian Daboll) is one of those teams that could make a head coach change.
As for the teams that will be focusing on preparing for the playoffs over the next two weeks, here is a look at the scenarios and matchups starting next weekend.
